Naturalist Expeditions: Moth Watch

MOTH WATCH WITH THE NATURALIST

Kick off National Moth Week (July 20th to July 28th), join Catawba Science Center’s Lead Naturalist Bruce Beerbower for a nighttime field trip. Participants in this adventure will leave CSC at 7 pm and travel by van to Catawba County’s Riverbend Park.

Upon arrival to the park, the Park Naturalist, Lori Owenby, will lead a fun dialogue about moths and their behaviors. During this evening program, guests will learn how to attract moths with an array of techniques. Once the moths have been lured to area, Lori and Bruce will help guests identify their late night visitors. CSC requires advance registration for this activity.
Minimum # of Participants: 6 ; Maximum 28
PRICE: $5 Members, $10 Non-Members

FAMILY BUG DAY

Saturday July 27, 2013, 11:00 am – 3:00 pm

COST: Free with general admission.

A variety of special insect related activities and programs will be planned for visitors of all ages throughout the day!

Some of these include:

Bug Bingo

Build a Bug

Insect /Creepy Crawler Race – Bring your own Arthropod Contestant
(NO Spiders, Wasps, Hornets, Centipedes or other dangerous
contestant PLEASE!)

Demonstration and display with an active BEE HIVE by the
CATAWBA VALLEY BEEKEEPERS ASSOCIATION

Visit the “mini-beast zoo” in the Naturalist Center (Featuring Live and Preserved Specimens! Including a variety of mounted Moths!)

Special Guest Speak at 2 pm –
“ALL YOU EVER WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT INSECTS –
BUT WERE AFRAID TO ASK!!”

Wear your favorite “Bug Costume” for a chance to win an insect related prize.
(You can dress as an insect, spider or other arthropod!)
