NMW new team member – Belen Mena

logoWe are happy to welcome Belen Mena as a member of the National Moth Week team. Belen has been an active supporte of NMW by promoting the project on her website and Facebook page and contributed designs for our website. Read more about Belen and her work:

Belen Mena sBelen Mena is the founder of a design studiodevoted to branding systems, visual communication, corporate image, and editorial design. Mainly focused on coffee table books of photography and art since 1992.

Throughout its professional track, belenmena has created over 200 brands and has designed more than 50 books.

The continuous search for visual elements, chromatics, and local forms are complemented with theoretical bases, a formal and orderly philosophy of design, and illustrating experimentation. All these compose a multi-discipline team devoted to country projects in the graphic field.

“Our main goal is to transcend global fashion and trends – which are now invading our country with state-of-the-art technology and access to high speed information. We establish technical design parameters and rescue a visual language with its own identity in the search for efficient solutions of each type of client.”

Belén Mena is co-author of several publications on conservation – “Sapos”, “Huellas de Mar”, and “Biota Máxima”, the latter published in Spanish, English, and French http://biotamaxima.blogspot.com/2010/03/exhibition-is-ready.html.

She has designed important awarded publications such as Sara Roitman’s “Imperdible” (2010 Sappi International Gold Award); Pete Oxford’s “Ecuador”, “Mongolia”, “Huaorani Spirit”and “Galapagos”; Ana María Chediak’s “Africa”, “Gestos Jondos” and “Bloom”;  Murray Cooper’s “Undiscovered Realms”, “Plumas”, “Colibríes del Ecuador”, among others.

She is the author of “Pachanga”. The book aims to explore moths as a incomparable natural resource inspiration, employing it as the basis for a bi-dimensional analysis of the compositional, geometric and chromatic possibilities of this macro-world. It seeks to make the link between our urban lives and those of these near-invisible beings who come out at night for their ‘pachanga’, dressed to the nines, like ladies of the night heading to the street corner.  * Pachanga = party

This publication has received important international acknowledgements, such as the 2008 IF Gold Award (International Forum of Design), and was nominated by the Art Directors Club for the best 2007 book. It has published in Spanish, German and Japanese.


She has actively participated in the Board of Directors of the Ecuadorean Graphic Designer Association, which she chaired from 2002 to 2005. She was also nominated as candidate for 2008 Ecuadorean Woman.
