The Nature Conservancy will host a special event on Friday at the Francis Carter Preserve in Charlestown, in celebration of the first annual National Moth Week. The event is cosponsored by the Rhode Island Natural History Survey. Participants are encouraged to bring a flashlight, camera and folding chair. Rain will cancel the event.
Beginning at 8 p.m., participants will walk to the preserve’s 35-acre grassland and take a mile-long hike around the field at sunset. With four intersecting habitat types nearby — grassland, shrubland, pitch pine forest, and hardwood forest — event organizers expect to attract a variety of moth species, possibly including the luna and polyphemus.
