John sent us a picture of his mothing setup and a description: I use a 13-watt CFL blacklight (which I think is a 60-watt-equivalent in terms of brightness) clipped to a tripod and projected on a white sheet draped over a latticework fence. I set it up a little before sunset and then take it down whenever I get too tired to stay up longer (usually around midnight, but I&#8217;ll go later if mothing is really productive).</span></p>

He started birding in his late 20s when he lived in D.C., and participated in several bird-related citizen science projects, including Christmas Bird Counts, the Great Backyard Bird Count, and the C&amp;O Canal Midwinter Bird Survey, which he helped organize for a few years. Currently he is volunteering for NJ Audubon’s Lower Raritan Bird Survey. In the course of birding, he became interested in insects, both as a food source for birds and because of their own extraordinary diversity. A few years ago, he started tracking moths in his own backyard, first with a porch light and then with a UV light and sheet. So far he has documented over 100 moth species in his backyard.</p>
