About National Moth Week

Moth week started in 2012 as a local mothing event through Friends of the East Brunswick Environmental Commission, a 501c3 non-profit organization based in Central New Jersey.

What began as a grassroots, local mothing event organized by Dave Moskowitz and Liti Haramaty in 20212, soon grew into an international citizen science initiative, inviting organizations and individuals worldwide to participate in documenting moth species across the globe.

Through free event registration, participants are empowered to contribute their moth sightings, photos, and observations to partner websites dedicated to moth and wildlife identification and study.

Global Reach

Since its inception, National Moth Week has captivated audiences far and wide. From its inaugural year with registered mothing events spanning 49 states and 31 countries, it has since expanded its reach. Now, annually registered events occur in all 50 states and extend to over 90 countries across every continent except Antarctica, including numerous island nations.

A Worldwide Collaboration

National Moth Week owes its success to a global network of dedicated volunteers. Spanning various fields from entomology and biology to art and communications, these volunteers share a common passion: to celebrate the beauty, diversity, and ecological significance of moths. Through their efforts, they aim to engage new audiences in appreciating and observing these remarkable creatures.

Partnerships and Collaborations

In its mission to promote understanding and appreciation of moths, National Moth Week collaborates with organizations worldwide. These partnerships focus on diverse aspects of moths’ ecology, distribution, and biodiversity, further enriching the global dialogue surrounding these fascinating insects.
